Subject: "discarded cornerstone"

Even though we discussed it in class, I hope no one minds my bringing up France in Scene 1 again.

First, Dr. Jackson or anyone who feels equal to it might reiterate the "discarded cornerstone" idea and how it applies specifically to France.

Second, I'd like to explore the mimetic nature of the suitors' respective behaviors. By the time Lear asks Burgundy and France whether they still want to marry Cordelia, two basic patterns of behavior have been laid out.
1. Goneril's and Regan's professions of Love;
2. Lears and their anger and repudiation of Cordelia.
Burgundy goes along with the repudiation; France with the professions of love. In a way, they each continue to participate in a game of unequal affections and rivalry. When Burgundy joins the game of scapegoating Cordelia, France takes the opportunity and finally wins the rivalry for Cordelia's hand. Also, given that Cordelia has hitherto been Lear's favorite, might France be appropriating what he witnessed?
