Subject: Communion and ritual

Girard discusses how to keep violence from reoccurring, primitive cultures will ritualize the original act of violence. Is this is same sort of mechanism that operates in the observance of communion? Especially in traditions where the elements are held to be the true body and blood of Christ? I know that we will study later on the ways in which the gospel message subverts the structures of violence upheld by primitive mythologies by participating in them. If the gospel story defeats the scapegoat mechanism, then why would the church continue to tell that story in an extremely "ritualistic" way? Is there any real danger that the violence that first drove Christ to be crucified on the cross by his countrymen alongside two criminals would repeat and explode again? Why this need for a repeated proxy sacrifice in the Mass?
