That’s really interesting about why they have cockfighting. Your post also made me think of the fascination with sports like pro-wrestling. Most people get really into seeing two guys pretend to mercilessly beat each other up. In wrestling they also have characters; some are considered the good guys and others the bad guys. Boxing is another example although I think a more serious one since the men usually are hurt more than in wrestling. People get into it and seem to tell themselves that this violence is ok because it is just a sport (it can also make some people very rich if they place their bets right). It’s also interesting that America really doesn’t have a popular sport dealing with animals fighting. The closest would probably be the illegal dog fights that happen. Spain has bullfighting where matadors’ main goal is to not be gored and to kill the bull. It has been a huge tradition in Spain and various other countries and is still practiced to this day. I’m not sure if bullfighting is seen in the same was as cockfighting, especially since in cockfighting you have two animals attacking each other rather than a human and an animal.
