I thought a sexy title would make people read this. I know Cicero didn't write anything on Puerto Rico. I like a lot of what you said here Betsy, and I think that a lot of it is true. Many societies seem to have rituals directed at allowing for a release of violent tensions within the community. Some involve religion: Cicero writes that "religion is the opiate of the masses" (theres the connection to the title). Other societies have Cock fights and football games and Halo tournaments. I will add that I dont think that this necessarily corresponds to mimetic theory. While it does fit within the framework of mimetic theory, it fits within other theories as well. The nature of man being violent and needing some sort of outlet for that violence since we're not allowed to be pirates anymore and can't defend the homestead seems to me an entirely reasonable cause for all of these 'controlled chaos' mechanisms that we've talked about.
