Yes, you've got the gist. It need not be the atheist only. There are plenty of Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment Christians and deists who would claim a certain silliness to primitive religions. Girard's point is that there is something quite serious in the "silliness/absurdities" of these primitive rituals. Many critics have brushed these myths aside, either dismissing them as superstitious or as attempts to secure a power-structure within a given community, or seeing in them a synchretism that sees all of these myths/religious systems as identical (Joseph Campbell, for instance).

He makes the case for religion as the best, yet most improbable, source of demythologizing on page 138 in _Things Hidden_.
