Subject: Double Transference and The Iliad

In "I See Satan Fall Like Lightening," the author explains the extension of the scapegoat senario in which the victim becomes a deity: "If they could represent the victim as to blame, the one responsible for the troubles that befell them, then in a kind of metonymical reasoning process (one thing associated with another) it would appear that the victim is also responsible for the new peace and order that have come about through the victim's death....This is the birth of the gods." Hints of this double relationship of scourge and pancea in the nature of the divine is present in the Homeric representation of the gods in the Iliad. Also, Homer seems to reveal the communal or self-deception inherent within the scapegoat scenario by linking such laments against the gods with narrations of those tragic events that are clearly the result of men's actions.
