Subject: A jealous God

In Chapter 1 of "I See Satan Fall," Girard argues that the Decalogue is a great example of prohibitions against mimetic desire. I noticed this same thing in church this past Sunday while reading them outloud. I do wonder though, if the ten commandments are so intent on guarding against mimetic rivalries, why is God introduced and defined in the ten commandments as a God in the tensions of mimetic desire: "You shall not make for yourself an image of the likeness of anything that is in the heavens above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters under the earth, FOR I THE LORD YOUR GOD AM A JEALOUS GOD, visitng the iniquities of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation." It appears that God argues against rivalistic mimesis among his people while he engages in it with other "competing" gods.
