Subject: Dante for Anselm, too...

“It is a sign of Dante’s insight into the text I have just read to you, as well as into other texts, that he was impelled, in his Divine Comedy, to show Satan nailed to the Cross—a picture that can only appear bizarre and out of place to those who maintain a conventional, sacrificial interpretation of the Crucifixion” (Things Hidden 193).

On the contrary, Satan is on the same team as the “old man” of Colossians, which also has been nailed to the cross (“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me,” Gal. 2:19-20). Dante’s image could not be more apt. I’m not saying merely that Dante’s image does not necessarily present difficulties for the sacrificial model—I’m saying that it fits perfectly with the sacrificial model, no stretching required. I wonder why Girard thinks it must appear “bizarre.”
