Subject: Freud and Girard

The Girard material for the last week referenced Freud a bit, and I was confused as to what was meant when Girard writes about "the 'triangular' pattern of erotic entanglements" (Introduction x). But I talked with a psychology-major friend of mine, who explained a few things about Freud.

Suppose Tommy has an Oedipus complex, and he desires his mother in imitation of his father. Freud suggests that Tommy try to identify with his father (at least as I kind of understand it), or in the Girardian sense, get closer and closer to imitating his model until he no longer feels that rivalry with his father. But isn't that exactly what Girard says leads to violence? I found that interesting.
