I think one of the genius things about the play is that Lear is in certain cases the subject, the object, the mediator, the vaniteux, and ultimately, a scapegoat. So to ask his role in the play is to ask how and why he changes his roles. When does he cease to be the mediator for, say, Gloucester, and become the subject appropriating Tom o' Bedlam's behavior? Is Lear the cause of his own destruction, or is it the result of the chaos of his kingdom and family? Since he causes that chaos, does that mean he scapegoats himself? It's also worth thinking about how Lear, victimizer of Cordelia, becomes a victim himself. (It's also somewhat depressing, because maybe there's no way out of the system, but there it is.)
