Now I have a dog myself and I love him and yes, I do admit that I talk to him like he can completely understand me. I'd also like to bring up something that my mom told me. It's a story of my aunt's. When my aunt and uncle first got a dog, that was when my family knew that they were really serious about settling down with kids. She says it's a great way to "prep" yourself for parenthood. It's kind of true though if you think about it. Dog require almost just as much care, affection, and money that children do. It's also been said that dogs are man's best friend. I think it might be a way in which we have an uncomplicated relationship. Substitute dogs for humans. Dogs are extremely faithful and loyal, and you don't really have to work too hard at the whole communication issue.

I hadn't really though of the closeness of dogs and humans as a blurring of distinctions and boundaries, but now that I think about it, it makes some sense. And I KNOW that I don't think of my dog as something monstrous. I wonder if there is a good and bad version to the "monstrous" like there was with Girard's forms of mimesis.
