Subject: Non-participatory model

Girard writes in Things Hidden of the results that come about when the object of mediated desire is gained by the Subject. He writes that the subject will either be disenchanted with the object or disenchanted with the model, but never with the imitative desire itself. Fine. But what about the illustration from the first week of class? There are two children in a room filled with 10 red balls. Child A picks up a ball, Child B wants the ball. Child A happens to be Dr Jackson's child, and gives over the red ball, picking up one of the other, equally good balls. Child B now desires the new ball. Lather, rinse, repeat. What happens when Child B has desired and achieved every ball, does this go on forever? Will Child B eventually hate balls and Child A? Will Child B give up and just start to play? How long does it go on, and to what end?
