There's a lot of voter inertia in both "blue" (democrat-leaning) and "red" (republican-leaning) states. People vote democrat because their parents and their parents' parents voted democrat, and so on. It would take a really special presidential candidate to break these kinds of inertia. George Bush was not one of these special presidential candidates, but he came awfully close.

I think a better idea than California seceding would be California splitting up into North California and South California or something to that effect. 55 electoral votes is just a ridiculous number of votes for any one state to have. Plus, one state's economic woes should not drag down a whole country by itself as has happened with California after the tech bubble burst. If the Big One (earthquake) happened in CA as predicted, the whole nation could sink into a deep recession.
