Tony, these articles (I have found some similar articles) are talking about recent developments. Your Korean experience may already be outdated. Also, Daegu is probably still a bit behind Seoul in such social developments.

What I can confirm is that the mindset of young Koreans is very much focused on how to get a good job, enter a good universtity, find a good husband. The Korean missionaries told me how they learned for the school examinatin and university entrance test, staying up all night, taking pills etc. (Their learning methods were very ineffective, they did not learn with fun and interest, but but by "cramming it in", the efforts and diligence was very high, but the effectiveness low, just as in UBF). From all what they told me I understood that there is a very strong spirit of competitiveness among the young people. Everybody wants to get rich and get a good husband/wife, and they work very target-oriented to reach these goals. Here in Germany, young people seem to be much more relaxed and careless about their future and their future "social state". Given that mindset, it is plausible that they spend much money on plastic surgery. Spend a little money and you have much better chances on the "marriage market." Also, parents invest a lot for their children - they care a lot about their education and future spouse. In Germany, parents are more relaxed. The main thing is that the child is happy.
