Something where we can have righteousness on our own, without grace, but by works and merit. That's what all cults prefer, including UBF. Where God does not serve us, but we serve God. Where God did not die for us, but we die for God. They cannot accept the fact that no matter what we do we can never be righteous before God. They cannot take salvation as an underserved gift. They want to deserve it as members of an elitist, hard working cult.

What bothered them was the idea that even faith is ultimatively a gift of God, or at least that God somehow helped in the process. They want to believe that "having faith" is something that you can be proud of, that it is something you did on your own, something that is done by tough decisionmaking and hard work. The group members who have this "tough faith" feel themselves "worthy" of being saved, and the idea that the whole world sorrounding them is not saved. That surrounding world deserves to be eternally condemned because they always "persecuted" the group and "lived an easy-going life."
