There's a counterpoint at http://homepage.mac.com/mkoldys/iblog/C168863457/E649908341/.

I'm not going to defend this inaugural. I find it as obscene as Clinton's two inaugurals and Bush's first. If it's not a dubious and bloody war, then it's famine, AIDS and genocide in Africa, or a million homeless in America; the tens of $millions that are spent on presidential inaugurals, after the hundreds of $millions spent on presidential elections for both Democratic and Republican presidents, could all be better spent. Down with the monarchy and inaugurals.

But I don't believe Ms. Bachrach, like much of the mainstream media, had anything bad to say about the tens of $millions spent on Mr. Clinton's two inaugurals. Her publication, a "glamour magazine," was probably full of fluff pieces detailing what designer dresses Mrs. Clinton and her daughter were wearing at the inaugurals, and what wines were served, and which of many Hollywood Clintonistas were in attendance.

The uninformed Ms. Bachrach doesn't even have a point about American soldiers being sitting ducks in Iraq. The armored Humvee issue isn't even an issue anymore. The sitting ducks are Iraqis; just for their sakes, this inaugural should have been kept modest or cancelled.
