I like Kurdish music. I am the owner of 26 cassettes of it. All bought at a time when I worked in Turkey This is the music of suffering its sad and haunting. It is very, very different. My favourite piece is by Shavan Perver, it is called Halebja, it is about the town where 6000 women and children were killed when Sadam Hussain gas bombed it, the music is such that you do not have to understand Kurdish to realize the message of the music. You cry when you here it.
The second piece I like best is by another Kurdish singer but who sings in Turkish, Ferhat Tunc, It is called Mettins Dirge. It is about Mettin Gokteppe a Turkish journalist on a freedom paper who was arrested in 1996 and beaten to death in his police cell. Tunc a famous singer heard about this, and penned this protest song. It became a big hit in Turkey, so the whole country Knew about this incident. Tunc was so famous that the authorities dared not touch him. He used his fame well
