Plus, they were illiterate. But, as I will write, there had to be a way for the few people who "experienced God" directly to pass on their witness of their experience, which leads to oral tradition, then written tradition.

Very few people, even in the biblical record, experienced God directly. I'll go out on a limb and say that most of the people who followed Jesus and believed in him after his ascension did so based on the second-hand testimony of the few that witnessed his life and miracles.
