In fact, recent beheadings in the Haiti chaos, in Thailand and the throat cutting of an already dead Theo Van Gogh seem to have been "inspired" by what has been done to hostages on video in Iraq, video made available all over the Arab world by Al Jazeera.

Christian fundamentalists like to call this a sign of the Lord's coming back, because the Bible tells us that violence will escalate.
While that may be true, first we should look at what happens: the "peace through strength" principle is failing, because those who oppose the establishment (regardless of which country) now demonstrate their own strength through violence. The only way the "peace through strength" principle could work out in the long run would be total domination, control and suppression. However, I don't think this fits into party line with the American tenor of "bringing people freedom".

So, the media should focus more on dialogue and to bring people to embrace one another than on creating separators, frontiers and hostility.

Too many people are too fascinated by horrors, crimes and killing - and the media lets them see their heart's desire.
It might be helpful if *all* sides would focus on intricate minute details: a U.S. soldier helping an old woman carry the groceries home, a muslim and an american child playing soccer... we never see those pictures, but I think they could have as much of an impact as the beheadings: people need to SEE that we're not talking about an infiltrating enemy but about people, human beings like ourselves...
