Subject: Gandhi and Arafat- A contrast in Leadership

While the world is watching Arafat, pass to history, after a controversial lifetime as the leader of the Palestinian people as their freedom fighter, a contrast with another much revered freedom fighter, Mahatma Gandhi of India is interesting:
- Gandhi was a man of non violent activism, and even belittled a British (Christian) police officer who kicked him with a boot by following the biblical example of showing the other cheek. Arafat always carried a gun with him, even when he visited India to show his respect to Gandhi.
- Gandhi was a poor man with no personal wealth and was dressed like the poorest Indian farmers, and was referred to as the half naked fakir. Arafat was always overdressed and had over 2billion in Swiss bank accounts while his people were living in refugee camps. His family was living in a luxurious way in Paris and will get pension of millions of dollars per month.
- Gandhi abstained form power and left it for his fellow men, while Arafat clinked to power and absolute power, even when he was about to die. He was the only one to authorize any payment to anyone, and none was allowed to question
- Gandhi was a citizen of the world, fighting injustice anywhere in the world, Arafat was single minded in the struggle of the Palestinian people, and always saw the world through the yellow tainted glass of who is friend of the Palestinian people and who is not.

May his soul rest wherever it has gone, and may the middle east get a new leader who is for peace and not for carrying a gun always( lest it go out of stock, in the shops)!
