Just a few points I wanted to clarify from my previous post.
1.Churches have a 503c non profit status. They can remain non profit as long as they remain non-partisan. The pastor of my church urged people to vote but was careful not to name one canadate. Of course, the Republican platform is closer to what Christian believe on the moral issues. So most Christians support the Republicans.
2. There are many reasonable left wing thinkers like Tom Wolfe, who have really criticized the left for being anti-religion and somewhat snobbish towards middle America. There are also many Americans who voted for Bush who sympathize with the economic goals of the Democrats but cannot embrace the more extreme anti-religion and anti-America rhetoric. I think the point of Tom Wolfe and others on the left is that the Democrats will be a minority part for a long time unless they learn to respect some of the religious beliefs and traditions of middle America.
