That picture was from Bavaria, which is a nearly exclusively Catholic area in Germany with its own culture. Once Protestants have been in Bavaria, but then in the time of the counterreformation, they were expelled from Bavaria and from Austria, which is very similar to Bavaria. Catholics usually have no problems mixing pagan elements, Catholic traditions, and Biblical teachings. The picture illustrates that very well.
