Depending on who's hot around the time of Miss USA, will determine what they're looking for. This idea of using Miss USA as a marketing tool only happened since NBC became the parent company. When CBS owned half of Miss USA, there wasn't as much marketing that went into the pageant and winners had less visibility. The last winners of all Miss U pageants have had the highest visibility of any pageant winners. But they pick the winner according to who is mainly represented in the media. This year, the blonde was back and in a big way. Jessica Simpson, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, etc., etc. The best way to market Miss USA and Miss Univ. is to have them be blondes. Last year, the first year NBC took over ownership from CBS, the first thing they did was change the crown. The crown now looks more like the peacock symbol that represents their network. Then, because NBC is a parent company of Telemundo, they wanted to market to their hispanic base, not to mention that at the time, Jenifer Lopez, Salma Hyek, Eva Mendez, etc. were all big in the media. So, they pick two hispanic women to represnt both crowns. Right now we don't know what will be in when the new year comes around. Maybe Destiny's Child will make a resurgence or maybe it will be Nikki Cox or Lucy Liu. There isn't marketing involved in the state level pageants and unless you want that to change so that judges could hand pick the winners, no one will ever know who can win Miss USA and who can't. The NJ girls that have been to Miss USA in the past 4 years have all been prepared to win. They all had great walks, great presence, great bodies (some moreso than others) and good interviews. But for whatever reason they didn't win. Just something to think about.
