Subject: a wonderful columnist gives us a gift (part 1)

Hello teachers and newspaper educators. This is a special gift from a great columnist named Harvey Mackey. He is a business entrepreneur who writes a column for the Star Tribune called Outswimming the Sharks. I read this column this morning and asked him if I could share it here. A reply came back quickly, giving me permission to repeat it here. Harvey said he likes for folks to pass along his columns. The first part is here and the second part is posted separately, because of forum space restrictions)

Did you ever hear the story about a rider on horseback who came across a squad of soldiers trying to move a fallen tree? He noticed a colonel standing by, giving orders. But the tree was just to heavy for the men to move.

"Why don't you help them? the man on horseback asked the colonel.

"Me? I'm a colonel, sir," he responded.

The rider dismounted and took his place beside the soldiers. Smiling at them encouragingly, he said, "Now, all together, boys -- heave!"

The big tree moved easily. The stranger mounted his horse. As he prepared to leave he said to the colonel, "Next time you've a tree to move, send for your commander-in-chief."

It was only then that the colornel and his men realized that the stranger was none other than Gen. George Washington.

The tree didn't move because Superman showed up. It moved because it took just one more person to make a difference.

I believe we often are put in a certain place at a certain time for a reason -- our chance to make a difference

(see next post for the rest of Harvey's wonderful column)
