Subject: lesson about height

One thing that would be good to mention in class this week is the news story distributed by The Associated Press about the height of children.

Reseachers at New York State University at Buffalo have concluded that the height of a child has no impact at all on how popular that child is with other children.

Very short or very tall children have just as many friendships, the reseachers found, according to the report which was based on an article in a professional journal called Pediatrics.

If you are a teacher -- particularly in elementary school or middle school -- discuss this research finding with your students.

Have everyone close their eyes, then asked those who think they are tall to raise their hands. Then, with everyone's eyes stilled closed, ask students who think they are short to raise their hands. Tell them students how many hands were raised.

Ask them why students sometimes are teased for being too short or two tall.

Tell them that last year U.S. government health officials approved a drug for very short children that can help them grow taller.

After hearing about the research project, what do the students think about such drugs?
