Subject: look into space this week

Things are looking up for science and elementary school teachers this week.

There are two major stories to follow in space.

1) Test pilot Mike Melvill on Monday will try to fly SpaceShipOne into space again. Last Wednesday, he had just made it, pulling his made-for-commercial-flight spacecraft out of a roll that had his ship make more than 30 barrel rolls. If he can pull off the flight Monday, he and his company will win a $10 million prize, which contest organizers hope will inauguarate an age of space tourism.

Ask your students if they would like to visit space? Why? Why not? Have they ever taken ride they thought was too dangerous? In a car? With their mom or dad driving? At an amusement park? On a school bus? Have them write a short essay about what it would be like to ride in space and what they would see.

2) The space station's oxygen system is broken. As days pass, the situation will get more critical for the astronauts currently on board. Find a story in your local newspaper about the situatoin. What does it say? What more do you want to know? How will these astronauts get home?

A U.S. astronaut and two Russian astronauts are going to the space station if their craft can get off the ground this month. What is the name of the Russian craft in which they will travel?

Why are United States space shuttles not flying?
