I cannot stress enough that the children are being taught, for the most part, all of these things. Parents do not reinforce topics learned in school and kids are not held accountable for their actions. In general, I find the state Standards that each class is required to cover a great nuisance, but they are thorough and include the things that students need. The majority of elementary teachers still reinforce drills and "memorization" to a fair extent. Of course, there is some of the hippy crap that offends all of our sensibilitieses, but they ARE being taught what they need.
