Lynx, I agree with you when it comes to natural ways usually being the best cure. It's my firm belief that anything man-made has a side effect, and I try to stay away from those things. Diet and exercise are the best things you can do to change and/or prevent a detrimental health status.

It's taken me YEARS of schooling, reading, and research to finally incorporate this way of thinking into my belief system, and the problem is not everyone will have the same beliefs. I'll use my SIL as an example - she gets hip pain when she gets up. My husband and I were getting it as well - I'd get up from sitting, and I'd walk like I was 70 years old from the pain I was having. I started taking glucosamine until I heard it might be linked with causing diabetes. I started doing yoga, and learned where I need to stretch so I didn't have that hip pain anymore. I convinced my husband he didn't need to take glucosamine anymore if he just did this stretching. Now he stretches, doesn't take glucosamine, and he's fine. My SIL knows this, but still takes the glucosamine, and still walks like an old lady every time she gets up. I've shown her the stretch that takes all of 60 seconds once a day, and she just can't, or doesn't, get in her belief system that something natural can work just as well, if not better, than a pill.

On the other side of the coin, my 18 year old, arthritic dog has glucosamine in her dog food. I can't really get my dog to stretch so I continue to give her the dog food. She still gets achy when she gets up, but her mobility and quality of life have improved tremendously. I know there may be a risk of diabetes by giving her this drug in her food, but you have to weigh risk vs. gain and that's what physicians do when they prescribe medications.

So even though medications/drugs/supplements may not work for everyone, in some cases they do work for some. For some people it's enough of a change to take the risk of the side effects - for me, I'm going to look for the natural way if I can find it. Although, if I've got a headache, I'm still going to pop an Ibuprofen. Risk vs. gain - live with the pain and risk the possibility of cognitive impairment and the side effects assosciated with it, or take the Ibuprofen and damage my liver a little? I'll go for a little liver damage over brain damage, and my short term outcome is I feel better, too :)
