If the global economic downturn is affecting Japanese tourism the way it is affecting American tourism, I don't think even a naked Hello Kitty would help them.

Let me refine that a bit. I live in one of America's prime tourist destinations. Our high-end tourists are still here and still spending. I'm not talking upper middle class; I'm talking about the ones who can buy multi-million dollar vacation homes without blinking an eye. Our middle class tourists are on the way out, and our low-end tourists are almost completely gone. If I didn't already live here, I wouldn't be able to vacation here. If I hadn't bought a home here eleven years ago, I certainly wouldn't be able to do it now. That's kind of depressing, not to mention ominous.
