Clearly it was relevant to the story, if people were asking about his love life. If there's going to be a discussion about somebody's romantic life, it's certainly reasonable to expect that their orientation would be important enough to be mentioned. And I'm sure it would have been mentioned much more directly in the story itself (instead of through indirect allusions, as seems to be the case) if there wasn't such a likelihood of a backlash from homophobes.
