Actually, in the main report linked in the Fox article, they mention that the same fridges aren't a problem in places like British Columbia where the energy is derived from hydroelectric power. In Alberta, where the study was performed, it mostly comes from coal and natural gas, because Alberta is a major producer of both. I would think that if Alberta would just sell its coal and gas instead of using it for electricity, and then use the money to buy power generated through cleaner sources, the problem would be solved.
