If your question is regarding views on healthcare, let's go down the nursing facility route. Neither my sister nor I were able to quit our jobs and take care of Mom, who (at age 81) could not be alone. We could not afford around the clock care. By the fourth nursing facility, we were weary, guilty, and spent. Mom passed away in May, and I am grateful that she no longer has to suffer the condescending, disrespectful manor of some aides. While some were wonderful, make no mistake about that, there are those that talked around her to us, like she wasn't even in the room. She was cognizant and alert, and was treated with less dignity that you'd treat a one-year old child sometimes. I am very soured and I hope I have the fortune to pass away in my sleep (not screaming like the rest of the passengers in my car, as the joke goes.) Seriously, my sister and I are trying, now, to do something about health care for the elderly, as at ages 53 and 50, we're gettin' up there. Sorry to be a downer, but you did ask, and I've got a tale to tell. Hospital personnel were not much better; I had screaming bouts in the halls with doctors and nurses who were so bent on following rules when it suited them, and had nothing to do with common sense. This is South Jersey I am speaking about - I live in southeastern PA, Chester County, where the countryside is quickly being eaten up by construction and my wooded area home may soon look out on a McDonald's , but... I am rambling so I will stop. Health Care is in terrible shape in this country; you folks are not old enough to realize it, but please, please wake up. Your votes next year may depend on it. You're probably caring for elderly parents, or will be soon (I'm probably the age of your parents, so you're not thinking about it yet.) One word of caution - make sure your parents have living will and resuscitation orders (can't remember the term). Make sure you are listed as powers of attorney. Make sure you have all the papers. Make sure they have signed everything - imagine trying to get your dad to mark the paper with an X while he is zoned out on morphine from cancer. These nightmares happen every day, and nobody seems to be addressing it. But, since you asked, and since I'm too embarrassed/shy/inhibited to reply to Tint's earlier post about Becca, well, I decided to write something here. Forgive me if I brought anyone's spirits down; I do mean to lecture; these are cold harsh facts and I'd rather you knew and were forewarned than surprised later. You're upset enough as it is. (I've also been misdiagnosed in the local ER, sent home with broken bones or pneumonia to find out later the injury was more serious. If you can wait to see your doc, stay out of the ER.)
