What does this phrase mean?

>a class legally protected from discrimination,

In this country, everyone is legally protected from discrimination on the basis of race, creed, religion, ethnicity, age, disability, etc... These laws are intended precisely so that we don't see the skin, the religious emblem, the crutches first and the person second. Discrimination doesn't need language as its vehicle, nor it is often manifested that way. It's is encumbant upon the employee to prove the case against the employer, and most employers are smart enough not to verbalize it. They'll just concoct other reasons and fire you for those. I know; it happened to me.

When you subscribe to the notion of banning speech that causes other people discomfort, you run into the thorny problem that not everyone is offended by the same thing.

My best friend can call me a bitch and I say "thank you," because she meant it as a compliment. I wouldn't, however, want my mother calling me one.

I myself am offended by the constant invoking of Christian dogma by our cheif executive. Can we ban that because I'm not comfortable with it?

Have you ever made someone uncomfortable simply by telling them the truth? Some people are grateful to know they have bad breath. Others might get mad. How are you to know which is which, and who is who?
