You find the same thing quite frequently among people from what we would consider Arab nations. Don't ever call someone from Iran an Arab. They're Persians. And people of Palestinian descent are Palestinians. And on and on.

When I was teaching English to non-native speakers, a guy from...Argentina, I think it was...gave me a lot of grief over people from the U.S. calling themselves "Americans," as if we were the only one on the American continents. I said I could understand his point to some extent, but that, unlike all of the other countries on those land masses, we actually have the word "America" in our country's name.

I'm curious, Cass, whether your daughter's professor is likewise offended by the term American or--for that matter--the terms European, South American, etc...
