Thanks for the review, Lynx. But could you expound a bit on why it's going to stick with you? Is it the imagery or the ability to put yourself into the man and boy's places (since it doesn't sound like there's much personalization?) or because it's so stark it makes its own statement of how the world will be?

I've read a few apocalypse books -- some came about because of a meteor, global nuclear destruction, interstellar invasion, plague... or some vague "something happened." Usually they've interested me but some had really shallow perspectives.

What was it that made this one interest you? Obviously there's something to the book -- that whole Pulitzer thing, for instance :) -- but what made it stand out?
