Task 4 – The awaraness of Learning Strategies in the Learning Process of Foreing Language

Robert is a shy student who prefers to sit on the corner of the classroom because he wants to remain unseen from the teacher and from his colleagues. He is so scared when the teacher asks him any sort of question that he is never able to say anything.

This is very common in language classrooms so it is up to the teacher to be pay attention to these kind of students and promote learner’s awareness of the learning strategies so useful to support learning of foreign language.

Rebecca Oxford (1990) has classified the Learning Strategies into Direct and Indirect Strategies. The Direct Strategies are divided into Affective Strategy and Social Strategy. Both of them deal with emotional and the environment of studies.

For a student who is having problem in talking in the classroom the first thing he has to do is to try keep calm, after that try to encourage himself to talk even when he knows he will make mistakes.
If he manages to do so, the best thing to do is to prize himself. Another good suggestion might be talking to other people about his learning. Thus he is using the Affective Strategies.

If he managed to control his emotional temperature, it means that he is ready to put the Social Strategy into use, which is how he will intereact with another student. He will ask questions, offer and ask for help.

To conclude, the main objective of a learner of a foreign language is the communicative competence and if he, from the beginning of his elarning process, be aware that there are effective tools to support his learning, he will certainly succeed.
