(It took him nearly a full seven minutes to gain enough courage to even muse about the memories that often haunted him. At least with the whelps it seemed he was too tired for the memories that used to wake him in the night and make him leave her bed early in the morning lest she wake to find him sweating and trembling like some weakling. He had been raised to become Laird from the moment he had shown the trait as a wee bairn, and therefore never had the coddling from his mam that his brothers and sisters received. He had been pushed from a very early age to outgrow, overaccomplish and never show weakness. Showing weakness might be something a human male could do while still maintaining his masculinity, but in a drakon male it could mean allowing a rival the chance to pick him apart and take all that he had.) Ken, the MacKail wernae even after me when they came raiding the keep. They were after a strong dragon, aye, but mostly they were wanting to destroy as many of us as they could so that none would remain to stop them. It doesnae do them a bit of good to have a dragon warrior if there are thousands of us ready to stop them as soon as they use it. (He was playing with the hem of her cotton tank where it met her hip, the sort of unconscious touching that he normally did not engage in and showed the he was mostly lost in his thoughts and using her as an anchor to come out of them. He was opening his mind to her as he brought back the memories, letting her walk through them with him even as he kept some of the worse guarded like a bit of shadow deep in his mind. He found that if he walked through those memories and looked at them through the eyes of someone that had defeated them it made it a little easier to stomach them.) They killed sixteen of us that day, including some of my kin. (The anger that laced his voice was still raw, like he was striding through his greathall with a pistol in his hand again. Dragon's did not tend to use firearms, but he had not cared that day, not given a shit about tradition when he heard screaming and gunfire in his own sanctuary. He allowed her to see and feel the pain he had been through when the MacKail came upon him. He had been shot twice, though his rage had not allowed him to feel the pain, nor did it make him more guarded to the evil killing his people. It was a metal bolt that was shot into his neck that brought him down. A coward had shot him with a shallow dark that stuck in his skin with barbs so that he could not pull it out, and as he attempted to pull on it the human had pressed a simple button that electrefied the dart, sending pain and confusion through his body on a muscle-stiffening pulse. Durgan had roared when he felt his brother go down, and he had mused in a sort of drunken moment that his brother's voice had never sounded so clear and strong.) It was the worst day of my life. (He said in a distant tone, his hand stilling against the small of her back where he had been toying with her shirt.)
