Subject: Ode to John-John, JFK, Jr.

Today, July 23, 1999, I watched the world say goodbye to John-John, or John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr. A husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and most importantly, a man 38 years of age. He was able to live more in his short life time than most do in 70 or 80 years. Born into a family of wealth enabled him to live the life of the the rich and famous. Since his father's assasination, and a little boy's final salute to the casket carrying his father's corpse, he has been a part of our lives. Some remember endearlingly that gesture while others are not so mindful or have a "so what" attitude. Now we will no longer beable to be reminded from time to time what is happening in his life. We will never be able to see him become a father, perhaps another Kennedy in the political arena, or grow old like everyone should. I am grieving for your memory and for all of those who knew and loved you and for the loss they feel.
I mourn as a mother would her own son. The heartache, anxiety, futility, and finality that these last 6 days have brought to all of us. The news media has made speculations that seem never ending. But one thing is for certain and that is what would have been, could have been, and should have been will never be known to us.
I am truly sorry for that same familiar pain your family is once again experiencing. I am thankful you touched our lives. As the sun has set and darkness is all around us we must all look up toward the eastern sky and know the sun will rise again. The good deeds you have done in secret will come to light. Those who were jealous of who and what you were will see that there was more to you than what they saw in the news. Your goodness will be remembered by those you helped and those who are thankful you were willing to share your wealth. And finally, for those of us who know the vision and dream will always remember the promise of Camelot.
