As for what the raccoon is planning to do, you would probably be better off asking her directly. First, you must learn raccoon language! "just kidding".

I can give you a few scenarios of what may happen.

1. She and her pups could stay under the deck for 6 to 8 weeks and then move on somewhere else.

2. She and her pups could stay under the deck until the weather gets cold again, then she may seek warmer shelter such as your attic.

3. She could just decide to move them into your attic sooner.

The most important thing is this type of situation is to NOT make things worse. I can tell you what I would do if it was my house...... I would check to see if there is enough clearance under the deck for a person to access the area where the babies are and if not, I would determine how difficult it would be to remove a plank on the deck near the babies. If there was access under the deck or a plank could be removed, I would hire a Licensed trapper to trap the mom and remove the babies within the next week or two. This would solve the problem and you wouldn't have to worry about the mom or her offspring getting into your attic or coming back next year.

Knowing that your hesitant on removing planks on the deck and me not knowing whether there is clearance under the deck, you may want to wait it out and see what happens in the next couple of months. DO NOT trap or have anyone else trap the mom until you know for sure that someone can access the babies.

At this point, I don't think I would try any scare tactics or disturbing her in any way to try and get her to move away from the area. This may cause her to feel threatened and she may move the babies into your attic.

Its a judgement call on your part. There are safety and health issues whenever raccoons are living in close proximity to humans, especially where there are children and pets involved.

Good Luck,
