Not sure exactly what you read without more information but you may have read something about hypothyroidism in women which increases your metabolism (for reference: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/hyperthyroidism.htm). Most information on hormones in women pertains to menopausal or just premenopausal women so without further information or specific questions, it's hard to answer yours. Keep in mind, oral contraceptives also effect hormonal balances which in turn effects metabolism. http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/49/5/752

Unless you're not feeling well and either gaining or losing a lot of weight without any explanation as to why, I wouldn't worry too much.
