>>Lara, i live in England (Manchester) and i've been dealing with eds for about 13 years, including four years at university, so i'm maybe in quite a good position to answer any questions/concerns you may have. As part of my degree i spent a few months in France. Like you, i nearly didn't go, because of a mixture of eating/confidence issues. All i can say is that going was the best thing i ever did. The difference in the me who went and the me who came back was amazing. I was living in a boarding school as an english teacher, and not going to meals with everyone meant i didn't socialise as much as i could have, but personally i couldn't eat in front of people. But i just ate 'safe' food in my room and made an effort to mix with everyone away from meals. In the UK it's probably not as much of a problem; food in general is less of a big thing. Most university halls have cooking facilities and it's quite easy to quietly do your own thing and even if you're quite weird about food (like i am!) no-one will notice. If Oxford is anything like Chester, your bigger problem will be limiting your intake of alcohol. Social life in British unis tends to revolve around drinking, not eating. My trick is to make sure you always buy your own drink, have diet coke, and say it's got vodka in it. That way, no-one gets on your back. Anyway, my email is mail@fran-kin-sense.co.uk - any specific questions, just email me, cos this post is getting altogether too long. Hope you decide to come over here - it's too good an opportunity to miss, especially at Oxford (does that mean you're mega-brainy?)
Take care
fran
