Pinpointing exactly when any member of the Beatles first used LSD is a difficult task. We do know the circumstances. John and George were at a party of a well known London doctor (Dr. Robert?). It was in their drinks. They were advised not to leave because strange and wonderfull things were about to happen. Thinking that there would be some bizare sex scene John, George and their ladies decided to leave. Driving around London when the effects took hold, George somehow managed to get them back to Johns mansion unharmed.
We know that the Beatles were using bennies and barbs during those 12 hour late shifts in Hamburg in 1961 and '62. Bob Dylan smoked marijuana with them during their first or second visit to the U.S. early in 1964. Dylan was known in the folk circles but not yet a 'star'. The new phenoms were familiar with his music and recieved him in their hotel. Bob had brought some pot with him. Cautious at first, the Beatles roared the night away with Dylan and his strange new potion. Ringo like it so well that he was quite high during his parading scene in "A Hard Days Night".
John described "Revolver" as "Just pot." This simply can not be. He also described their first acid trip as he being the driver of a giant submarine carting George, Cyn and Patty. This could have been Pauls inspiration for "Yellow Submarine". John also relates the story of one acid trip meeting Peter Fonda in a club and telling him "You can sit with me, but you have to not talk." Whereas Fonda continued to tell him "I know what its like to be dead, man." The inspiration for "She Said She Said". He further describes reading "Tibetan Book Of The Dead" on acid inspiring "Tomorrow Never Knows." I hate to dispute John Lennon, but that rules out "Revolver" as 'just pot'. Even earlier, he recounts an acid trip just after an early recording of "Rain" where he mistakenly put the reel tape on backwards.
Paul described "Im Looking Through You" as being inspired by the disapproval of his girlfriend Jane Asher when finding the decor of Pauls home having been changed to suit his LSD state of mind while Ms. Asher was away. John recounts writing "Nowhere Man" in between trips. "Day Tripper", ummm. It had taken John and George several trips before convincing Paul to try this new product, therefor dating the Beatles first LSD experience to at the latest late summer.
I had always thought that "Tell Me What You See" sounds like it may have come from the experiences of LSD. This is only my perspective and not based on any evidence. That would put the date as early as May of 1965.
At any rate, we do know that at least three of the Beatles were taking LSD prior to the recording of "Rubber Soul" in late September 1965.
