In December 1966 the Beatles reassembled in the studio to record four new songs, "Strawberry Fields", "Penny Lane", "When Im 64" and "Only A Northern Song" for their upcoming album. Of those only one made it to the album. George was quite upset that "Northern Song" was rejected. The other two made up their lead off single the next February.
John and Paul invisioned the album to be a journey through their childhood. That idea was dropped when Paul presented the frame for the title track. They knew going into it that this was something special. Going way over budget on recording and packaging with wreckless abandon, EMI execs had to admit that the Beatles had saved their livelihood and although they complained, let the matter rest. The new album would pay for itself even before its release.
Both sides of the album are a continueous groove. On the British release the groove runs into itself making it the never-ending album. Unique to "Sgt. Pepper" are a 41 piece orchestra, sound effects, hired musicians, a conceptual gate-fold cover with cut-outs inside, even the paper sleeve was mod.
There have been those who have said that "Sgt. Pepper" is over-rated. They are probably the same people who say Jimi Hendrix wasn't that great a guitar player. "Sgt. Pepper" is almost unanimously rated as the greatest album of all time. Listen to it once in relation to what came before it. Listen to it once in relation to how it has influanced music since. Listen to it once in relation to how it kicked off the 'Summer Of Love'. Listen to it once on its own merits. In all instances you will agree with the majority.
