The Beatles had literally not had a day off since the release of "Please Please Me" when they were rushed to put out an album for holiday gift giving. As a result the Beatles sound tired and rushed on their fourth album. Not to mention they were also stoned on marijuana.
Critics have not been kind nor have they been fair when critiquing "Beatles For Sale". True, it is not one of their best albums, however, it does foreshadow strange new directions and experimentations that would be further explored on "Help" and "Rubber Soul".
Of the 14 tracks only 8 are originals. Carl Perkins was thrilled with their renditions of two of his songs. They bettered the great Buddy Hollys' version of "Words Of Love".
Of their own songs the lads begin to show great thought and perspective. "No Reply" slowed a bit from its earlier demo with more diverse arrangement. The three part acapella opening to "Im A Loser" that they would return to with "Nowhere Man" and every future rock band would try to immitate. The country feel and clever lyrics of "Babys In Black". Pauls introspective "I'll Follow The Sun". The use of timpani on "What Youre Doing". The fade in opening which destinguishes "Eight Days A Week". Truely one of the most sensative and heartfelt songs "I Dont Want To Spoil The Party."
If the Beatles had had the time to utilize the studio "Beatles For Sale" might have been one of their best and have blown the minds of critics and musicians the way "Rubber Soul" would a year later.
