I had a running thing going with my neighbor for years, as he sprayed for weeds every year, and I told him to leave my dandies and wild violets alone. He then took to "trimming" my trees along the property line. It's one thing to trim a branch or two that hangs over the driveway a bit, but we really got into it when I awoke one Sunday morning to the sound of a huge chain saw to find that he had cut halfway through a giant oak that was well over on my land. I awoke too late to save the tree, but I told him if he ever touched another thing in my yard that he'd find out what that tree felt like when he sliced it in half. It's taken over 20 years to grow a maple in its place that gives 3/4 the shade it did.

I am also a firm believe in letting the leaves be when they fall in the autumn. As stated in this tale, they do provide protection for the roots of the grass and flowers for the winter. In the spring I usually rake them up around the seedlings to help keep moisture in the ground around them while they start to grow. Then by the time the flowers are bigger and taken root well the dead leaves have broken down and are feeding them.

Nature knows what's best for itself, too bad man likes to interfere. Somewhere along the way man appointed himself boss of the earth and all that is upon it and began to abuse it instead of taking care of it as his forebearers had promised to do. Now a lot of people live in concrete jungles and some kids walk down streets that have no trees, no flowers, no birds, nothing resembling nature at all. I find that sad, for I could not live without squirrels, birds and other critters around to amuse me.

Peace and keep those LOVE lights glowing,
Betty Lee
