Has anyone read an extraordinary book, in English called 'The Silent Duchess' by the author Dacia Maraini? It is a book with an extraordinary surprise ending (or near-ending), one of, if not The, most surprising turnouts I have ever read! It is also beautifully translated by Dick Kitto and Elspeth Spottiswood.

No, I've never heard of it, or its author. Is it recently published, or an older book? What's the story about, without giving away too much?

It;s the story of a girl married in Italy at the age of thirteen to an uncle, not apparently a problem with the church of the time, 1600s I think but I must check. She is totally dumb.

Two problems (age and incest) that were not a problem then? And we always have the idea that the olden days were so much more sedate and restricted than now. It seems they were, but only for women.

I read The Silent Duchess and loved it, but the ending was mercurial. She seemed to be either imagining what she might do or doing it or, possibly, both. It's a pity we don't hear more about Dacia Maraini as she's said to be one of Italy's greatest living writers. However, The Silent Duchess would seem to be unfilmable and that's hard on an author these days when we usually hear about the film deal before the book goes into print(I'm throwing down the gauntlet Hollywood). Maybe the unfilmable book is literature's greatest hope? Thank God the good old days of the 18th century are gone though, what!
