Which are your favourite classic novels (ie, pre-1920)? I love Jane Eyre, Vanity Fair and Oliver Twist.

Classical implies both a period of particular excellence and of origin. In that light I would say a good word for Humphrey Clinker by Tobias Smollett since it qualifies as both an early and very successful book. All of Jane Austen is beyond price. Some of Dickens succeeds and also Trollope and Eliot but I champion the unknown and unjustly forgotten Sheridan Lefanu, especially his The House by the Churchyard.

Would you believe I've never actually read Le Fanu, although the setting for his House by the Churchyard is just down the road from me. I must give him a go. Of Dickens my favourite is David Copperfield. Trollope I have never attempted, either - the density of his work just scares me off.
