Man arrested after shooting his car

By Herald staff reports

A Lauderdale-By-The-Sea man was arrested after putting his ailing car out of its misery with a gun.

At about 1:30 p.m. on Friday John McGivney, 64, walked out of his home at the Bougainvillea Isles Apartments in the 4500 block of Bougainvillea Drive, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Clutching a loaded .380 caliber, semi-automatic pistol in his hand, McGivney walked across the parking lot and up to his green, 1994 Chrysler LeBaron. He pointed the gun at the aging auto and calmly pumped five rounds into the car's hood.

When a shocked George Haberkorn, the property manager, asked what he was doing, McGivney replied, ``I'm putting my car out of its misery, George.''

McGivney then tucked the gun into his pocket and walked back into his apartment, according to the sheriff's office.

After getting a call of shots fired, BSO deputies rushed to the scene and set up a perimeter around the apartment complex.

They ordered McGivney to come out of his apartment unarmed and with his hands up. He did, and was subsequently charged with a firearms violation. He bonded out of jail the next day.

Except for the car, no injuries were reported, BSO said.
