Marquette unveils nickname choices
May 24, 2005 — The choices are in for Marquette University's future nickname. The school released ten choices today for its new nickname. The names were picked from the hundreds suggested by members of the Marquette community.
Some of the names are ones from the school's past -- Golden Eagles, Blue and Gold, Golden Avalanche and Hilltoppers.

The other choices are Explorers, Saints, Wolves, Golden Knights, Voyagers and Spirit.

Now the school will let students, alumni, employees and season-ticket holders vote on the names starting tomorrow. The school hopes to have a new nickname by July first.

The school has taken on the soul-searching exercise a year after alumni pushed to restore the old Warriors nickname.

But the board has rejected a return to the name to avoid upsetting American Indian groups.

Possible nicknames for Marquette University

Here is the list of proposed Marquette nicknames on which students, alumni, season ticket holders and faculty will vote, along with background or reasons they were included (there also is a write-in option, but write-ins for the former nickname of Warriors won't be considered):

Blue and Gold: Marquette's first nickname, from 1892-1916.

Explorers: Marquette University's namesake, Father Jacques Marquette, was a Jesuit missionary and explorer.

Golden Avalanche: from 1924-37, Marquette's football team was called the "Golden Avalanche" by sports media for the image of the football players in golden helmets charging down the field.

Golden Eagles: The current nickname from 1994.

Golden Knights: Knights are known for bravery, dedication and their noble defense of important causes. Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, Wis., used the knights as its nickname for 95 years until it closed in 1975.

Hilltoppers: The name has been connected to Marquette athletics since 1917 and was first used because the original Marquette building was built on top of a hill. It represents a person who has attained great heights.

Saints: The Marquette community has created a tie to two saints -- St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits, and St. Joan of Arc, the namesake of the chapel on the Marquette campus.

Spirit: The school says it captures the character and energy of its student-athletes and coaches. Spirit also refers to a higher power.

Voyagers: Voyagers take risks and explore new horizons.

Wolves: The wolf is part of the crest of the family of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, and is featured on the official seal of Marquette University.
