「朝三暮四」--是在莊子的《齊物論》入面找到的：「狙公賦芧，曰：『朝三而暮四。』眾狙皆怒。曰：『然則朝四而暮三。』眾狙皆悅。」
故事是發生在宋國,有個叫狙公的人，他喜愛獼猴，更自己養了一大群獼猴。他能明白獼猴的心意，獼猴也會討狙公的歡心。狙公寧願減少家裡的口糧，也要讓獼猴吃的飽。不久，家裡的口糧不夠了，狙公想控制獼猴的食量，但又怕這群獼猴不順從自己，於是先騙牠們說：「以後分給你們橡樹的果實，早上三粒，晚上四粒，夠吃了吧？」這群獼猴聽了嫌少，都直立起來發脾氣，過了一會兒，狙公改口說：「給你們橡樹的果實，早上四粒，晚上三粒，總該夠了吧？」這時，獼猴以為可以多得一顆果實，顯得十分高興。
這成語現在多用來形容變化不定，反覆無常的人，但原本用來指使用欺詐的手段進行欺騙。
